Giant trees are recognised world wide for their cultural significance and their ability to inspire awe and wonder.
Tasmania has the right combination of environmental factors - climate, soils and fire regime - to foster the growth of trees to massive height and girth. Around the globe, all of the areas which produce big trees have similar climates.
Forestry Tasmania is responsible for the management of Tasmania's State forests and has a policy of protecting trees which are 85 metres or more in height, or 280 cubic metres in volume.
There are approximately 100 known giant trees in Tasmania (Feb 2009).
